||This course consolidates the knowledge gained in the Power Generation course This course emphasizes the equipment used and the auxiliary systems used to ensure reliable operation of power plants at optimum levels of efficiency and safety. The detailed working of the condensate – feedwater systems are studied, followed by the cooling water systems. Water treatment is treated separately, given its importance both to the power plant as well as the ecosystem. Boiler and steam generators are studied with construction, operation and maintenance details. Steam and gas turbines are also studied for construction, O&M viewpoint. Several different combined cycle power pant configurations are studies for comparison of efficiency, reliability and appropriateness to context. Energy storage is an increasingly crucial bottleneck, and is reviewed for existing technologies including batteries; flywheel; pumped hydro and compressed air. Finally, environmental impact due to pollution and mitigation methods and technologies are covered.
