Libel laws, broadcast regulations and copyright law all have an impact on a writer's freedom to publish/broadcast material. Libel laws protect someone from being defamed in the media, broadcast regulations are in place to prevent stations from broadcasting obscene content or profane language, and copyright law is meant to protect a writer from having their words stolen by someone else. (An exhaustive list of the CRTC's Statues and Regulations can be found here: Ethics are as important to the media writer. What's considered ethical or unethical behaviour varies from medium to medium, but if you're going to behave ethically in your field, you alone will determine whether you follow standards ethics codes set out by some media organizations.
