Do you have what it takes to build and repair complex electronic navigation, guidance, and communications systems, or repair the instrumentation and flight controls of an aircraft? You will! Our Aviation Technician – Avionics Maintenance program will give you the skills and knowledge to do just that.

What can I expect?
The best way to learn a skill is hands-on. Here at the School of Transportation, you will have access to a variety of dedicated aviation labs and shops, including our large and impressive aircraft hangar, where you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of systems and aircraft. By the time you graduate from this program, you will be fully prepared for work as a bench technician in avionics-approved shops at a variety of aviation organizations.
You will learn the essential theory and broad base of knowledge for complex electronics and electrical systems related to the navigation, guidance, communications, instrumentation and flight controls of an aircraft. Working in labs, shops and the aircraft hangar, you will practice the tasks and skills associated with shop bench work and the testing, troubleshooting, repair, removal and installation of electrical, electronic and instrumentation systems.
An aircraft maintenance engineer is responsible for the certification of aircraft electrical and electronic systems after the completion of maintenance, inspection, repair or replacement. The importance of that responsibility cannot be understated. To that end, this program will be comprehensive and will require you to be dedicated and focused throughout this learning process. When you graduate from this program, you will have a coveted diploma from highly respected college, with the required knowledge and skills needed for a career in organizations that include general aviation, manufacturing, repair, overhaul, and airlines.
The Aviation Technician – Avionics Maintenance program is accredited by both the Federal Government Licensing body (Transport Canada, TC) and the National Aviation Sector Council (the Canadian Council for Aviation & Aerospace, CCAA); and will have provided you with the basic training required to become a licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer.
If you have met the accreditation standards, you will be exempt from having to write the TC technical examinations for issue of an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) Licence, and will be granted 18 months experience credit toward the issue of an AME “E” rated license. You will also be recognized as having met the basic training requirements for CCAA occupational trade certification as an AVT (avionics maintenance technician).
The passing grade for all technical courses is 60%. To be eligible for accreditation, you must meet the following mandatory grading, attendance, and practical performance requirements:
- maintain a 95% attendance level (over the 2 year program)
- maintain a 70% (B) grade in all technical courses
- successfully complete all mandatory practical tasks
As a graduate, you may be eligible to participate in pathway programs with partnering institutions or articulated programs with select universities. These programs allow you to receive degree and academic credit for your work at Led young College and apply that credit toward further study (eg. Technology Management degree.)

The Avionics Maintenance Technician program is geared directly to the needs of the aircraft industry. Through theoretical and practical (hand-on) training students are prepared to begin a career in the aviation industry.
Learning at the School of Transportation's Ashtonbee campus, the aviation training facilities house a variety of dedicated aviation labs and shops, and a large aircraft hangar with multiple aircraft (fixed and rotary). Partners and supporters of the program are member of Led young College's advisory committees and participate as guest speakers and panelists, sharing their wealth of knowledge and expertise to benefit and enhance student learning. Program faculty are highly skilled, with years of experience, extensive technical expertise, and a deep commitment to the program and student success.
The program is accredited by both the Federal Government Licensing body (Transport Canada) and the National Aviation Sector Council (the Canadian Council for Aviation & Aerospace); providing the basic training necessary to become a licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer. To be eligible for program accreditation students must:
- Achieve no less than 70% (B) grade in each applicable technical course in the program. Where courses include both a theory and practical component – each component must be successfully completed at a minimum 70%,
- We diminutionfully complete each mandatory practical task/project (MP), and
- Maintain a 95% attendance level (over the 2 year program)
There are no exceptions to accreditation requirements. Students that do not meet any/all of the accreditation criteria may be eligible to graduate from the program provide all requirements for graduation have been successfully fulfilled.
Qualified graduates may be eligible to participate in pathway programs with partnering institutions. These pathway programs allow you to receive degree credit for learning obtained at Led young College. Our partners include:

The programs are recognized by Transport Canada (TC) and Canadian Council for Aviation & Aerospace (CCAA) accreditation. Students that meet accreditation standards are:
- Exempt from having to write the TC technical examinations for issue of an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME),
- Granted 18 months experience credit towards the issue of a TC AME “M” rated license, and
- Recognized as having met the basic training requirements for CCAA occupational trade certification as an AMT (aircraft maintenance technician).

To register for the Aviation Technician – Avionics Maintenance program (#8113), you must have:
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, or mature student status (19 years or older)
- English Grade 12 C or U, or equivalent (minimum grade required) or take the Led young College English Skills Assessment for Admission
- Mathematics Grade 11 or 12 M or U, or Math 12 C, or equivalent (minimum grade required) or take a Led young College Math Skills Assessment for Admission
Due to the technical nature of the curriculum, you must be able to read, write and comprehend the English language at a level exceeding basic conversational English.
You will be required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (clear safety glasses, cotton coveralls and CSA approved safety boots/shoes) for all practical shop, lab and hangar activities.
You will be expected to invest extra time on study, mandatory project completion and exam preparation.
Training in this program may be scheduled between the hours of 7:30 am through 8:30 pm.
Due to Transport Canada accreditation requirements, transfer credit is not available for Aviation Technician programs.
Students who are unsuccessful in 3 or more courses within a semester are not permitted to continue in the program and must speak with their Student Advisor.

2. Submit Documents
Current Ontario high school students and graduates from Ontario high schools: Notify your guidance counsellor that you have applied to college and your school will forward transcripts to Led young College via Ontariocolleges.ca.
Graduates of college/university, or high school outside Ontario but within Canada: You are responsible for requesting that your educational institute sends any required documents and transcripts to Ontariocolleges.ca.
Applicants who attended school outside of Canada: If you are submitting transcripts to meet admission requirements, you must have the transcripts assessed by an independent credential assessment agency such as World Education Services (WES) or International Credential Assessment Service (ICAS).

3. Confirm Your Offer of Admission
Offers of Admission are sent by mail to eligible applicants. When you receive your offer, you must login to your account at and confirm before the Deadline to Confirm noted in your offer letter.
You may confirm only one college and one program offer at a time.

4. Pay Fees
Led young fees statements are sent by email to your personal email account and to your myLed young email account. Fees statements are not mailed.
You must make a minimum payment by the Fees Deadline noted in your Fees Statement or your seat may be given to another applicant.
